Dental amalgam also described as “silver-fillings”, has been used by dentists for
more than a century. It is made from a combination of metals like mercury, silver,
tin, zinc and copper. The main advantage of Amalgam when compared to other fillings
materials (such as tooth-colored or composites or gold fillings) is that they are
very inexpensive and they are very durable even in stress bearing areas in the mouth.
Because of their durability, these silver-colored fillings are often the best choice
for large cavities and when the cavities are below gum line when it is not critical
to maintain a moisture free environment. This is why Amalgam is commonly used in
kids and special needs patients.
Although the major disadvantage of amalgam is appearance of itself, it is still
choice of material for many clinicians but ideally avoided in the front of the mouth.
Many people think it might not be safe to use Amalgam filling as they contain mercury.
It is very important to know that when in combined form with the other metals, it
forms a very safe and stable material. Many studies have shown and confirm the safety
of Dental amalgam. Extensive research and s tudy after study shows amalgam is safe
and effective for filling cavities.
Organizations like American Dental Association , U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, U. S. Food and Drug Administration and World Health Organization
all agree that based on extensive scientific evidence, dental amalgam is a safe
and effective cavity-filling material. The Alzheimer’s Association , American Academy
of Pediatrics, Autism Society of America and National Multiple Sclerosis Society
—all science-based organizations like the ADA—also say that amalgam poses no health
risk.
It was recently stated by Mayo Clinic Research team that the form of mercury (actually
known as methylmercury) which accumulates in fish and lead to health problems when
ingest more is not the form of mercury used in silver amalgam material. They reaffirmed
that Dental Amalgam fillings were safe and durable.
As your dentist our utmost priority is your health and safety. That’s why we continuously
educate ourselves to be up to date and current with all research in the dental world.
Prevention is better than cure. Ideally no filling is always better than any kind of filling. The best way to decrease the risk of cavities and other dental diseases is simply by:
