Mouthwash or mouth rinse is not a replacement for brushing and flossing,
but it is a helpful addition to the daily dental hygiene routine for some
people. Mouthwash can get in between teeth, reaching areas that a regular
toothbrush can’t get to. Various types of mouthwashes are available and
each has its own therapeutic effect.
There are 2 types of mouth rinses:
1. Therapeutic Mouthwash: These rinses contain active ingredients to kill
bacteria. If they contain Chlorohexidine they reduce plaque, gingivitis and
tartar formation and in turn treat gum infections. If they contain
fluoride, they prevent or control tooth cavities.
2. Cosmetic Mouthwashes: These have active ingredients, which help reduce
bad breath and leave a pleasant taste in your mouth.
Mouthwash is not recommended for children until the age of 6 or 7 years.
The swallow reflex is not well developed at this age and accidental
swallowing of large quantities may cause nausea, vomiting and intoxication.
Your dentist at Care Dental Clinic will guide you to choose the right
mouthwash depending on your dental health needs.
